Rose Quartz
Quartz var. Rose · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs in massive crystalline form; rarely found as distinct crystals
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace amounts of Titanium, Iron, or Manganese
Formation Process
Igneous/Magmatic; typically forms in late-stage hydrothermal veins or granitic pegmatites
About This Crystal
A translucent to hazy pink variety of quartz. It features a vitreous luster when freshly broken and often contains microscopic mineral inclusions (dumortierite) that cause its characteristic cloudiness. The specimen shown is a rough, unpolished chunk with conchoidal fracturing.
Physical Characteristics
Color ranges from pale shell-pink to deep rose-red; White streak; No cleavage; Conchoidal fracture; Specific gravity of 2.65; Non-magnetic; Often shows weak purple or white fluorescence under UV light.
Optical Properties
Refractive index 1.544–1.553; Double refraction (uniaxial positive); Often shows a hazy/milky transparency due to microscopic inclusions; Can exhibit tyndall scattering.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Brazil (Minas Gerais), Madagascar, South Africa, Namibia, and USA (South Dakota)
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness 7; High durability and tough (no cleavage); Stable under most conditions but sensitive to extreme heat.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners if heavily included; Store away from direct sunlight as some specimens can fade over time.
Rarity & Value
Common; Very affordable as rough specimens; Value increases with color saturation and transparency; Star rose quartz (showing asterism) is more valuable.
Special Characteristics
Can exhibit asterism (six-rayed star) when cut en cabochon due to oriented rutile inclusions; Often exhibits a 'soft' glow due to light scattering in the stone.
Lore & History
Historically used in ancient Egypt and Rome as a stone of beauty; Modernly associated with the Heart Chakra. Traditionally regarded as the 'Stone of Unconditional Love' and emotional healing in crystal lore.
