Hematite with Jasper
Hematite (var. Kidney Ore) in Jasper matrix · Mineral Specimen and Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal (botryoidal or reniform habit)
Mineral Group
Oxides
Chemical Formula
Fe2O3 with SiO2
Formation Process
Hydrothermal and sedimentary deposition, typically forming in iron-rich environments through precipitation and low-grade metamorphism
About This Crystal
The specimen displays a smooth, metallic, dark gray to silvery botryoidal or reniform (kidney-like) hematite mass embedded within a reddish-brown earthy jasper or iron-stained quartz matrix. The surface of the metallic portion is highly lustrous, while the surrounding matrix is matte and granular.
Physical Characteristics
Dark metallic gray to reddish-brown body color, reddish-brown streak, no true cleavage, uneven to conchoidal fracture, specific gravity around 4.9 to 5.3 for the iron-rich portions, brittle tenacity, non-magnetic in its natural untreated state
Optical Properties
Metallic to submetallic luster on the hematite portions, earthy luster on the matrix, opaque, uniaxially negative for optical character
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Found globally; notable deposits in Brazil, USA, UK, and Australia in sedimentary iron formations
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 for hematite and 6.5 to 7 for the quartz/jasper matrix; good durability for handling, though brittle under sharp impacts
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid harsh acids or prolonged soaking due to potential iron oxidation or matrix degradation; store separately to prevent scratching softer stones
Rarity & Value
Common to uncommon depending on the aesthetic quality of the specimen; typically affordable and valued as a mineral specimen or for lapidary work
Special Characteristics
Displays distinct botryoidal or reniform growth habit with a striking contrast between metallic silvery-gray hematite and reddish-brown jasper
Lore & History
Historically used as an amulet for protection, grounding, and balancing energy in various ancient cultures; associated with the root chakra in modern metaphysical practices as a grounding stone
