Yellow Calcite
Calcite · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Crystal System
Trigonal, massive or tumbled habit
Mineral Group
Carbonates
Chemical Formula
CaCO3
Formation Process
Sedimentary, metamorphic, or hydrothermal precipitation from calcium-rich solutions
About This Crystal
Tumbled stone with a smooth, polished surface, exhibiting a vibrant yellow color with white veining and translucent to opaque transparency. Vitreous to waxy luster typical of tumbled carbonate minerals.
Physical Characteristics
Yellow body color with a white streak, perfect rhombohedral cleavage visible on internal fractures, uneven fracture, specific gravity of approximately 2.71, brittle tenacity, and often exhibits pink or yellow fluorescence under UV light.
Optical Properties
Uniaxial negative with strong birefringence (double refraction), giving a doubled image when viewed through transparent crystals.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Global distribution including Mexico, Brazil, USA, and Madagascar; formed in sedimentary, metamorphic, and hydrothermal environments
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness of 3, low toughness, sensitive to acids (fizzes with dilute HCl), poor wearability for rings due to softness and perfect cleavage.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water only; avoid harsh chemicals, acids, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to moisture or direct sunlight.
Rarity & Value
Common, widely available, inexpensive, and rarely subjected to synthetic enhancements.
Special Characteristics
Strong birefringence and effervescence when exposed to hydrochloric acid.
Lore & History
Often associated with the solar plexus chakra, traditional crystal healing lore links yellow calcite with clearing negative energy, enhancing self-confidence, and promoting emotional stability.
