Agate Geode with Quartz Druzy

Quartz var. Agate / Macrocrystalline Quartz · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Agate Geode with Quartz Druzy

Crystal System

Trigonal/Hexagonal system. The outer shell is microcrystalline (cryptocrystalline) while the interior druzy consists of small prismatic quartz crystals.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)

Formation Process

Hydrothermal/Igneous: Forms when silica-rich fluids seep into gas cavities in volcanic rock, depositing layers of chalcedony followed by macrocrystalline quartz in the center.

About This Crystal

A polished nodule featuring a cream-to-tan waxy chalcedony outer shell and a hollow central cavity lined with sparkling, colorless-to-white quartz druzy. The exterior is smooth and rounded, while the interior surface is granular and reflective.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Cream/beige shell with white/clear crystals; Streak: White; Cleavage: None (quartz has no cleavage); Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.6 – 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert or faint green/yellow under UV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544 – 1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Luster: Waxy on the polished agate surface, vitreous (glassy) on the internal quartz crystals; Diaphaneity: Translucent to opaque shell, transparent interior.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Commonly sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, or Morocco. These typically form in vesicles of volcanic rocks (basalt or andesite).

Hardness & Durability

Mohs hardness: 6.5 – 7. Toughness: Good (agate is tougher than macrocrystalline quartz). Stability: Highly stable, though sudden thermal shock can cause cracking.

Care & Maintenance

Safe to clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if there are visible fractures. Generally resistant to light, but avoid harsh chemicals like hydrofluoric acid.

Rarity & Value

Very Common. Value is determined by the aesthetics of the cavity, size, and presence of interesting inclusions or 'eyes'. Most specimens are affordable for collectors.

Special Characteristics

Druzy effect: The internal cavity displays a 'carpet' of tiny crystals that sparkle intensely under direct light. The piece also shows a distinct brown iron-stain inclusion on the top rim.

Lore & History

Historically, Agates were used in amulets in Ancient Egypt and Sumeria. In metaphysical lore, Agate is traditionally associated with grounding and stability (Root Chakra), while the quartz druzy is believed to amplify energy and clarity.
