Red Jasper
Silicon Dioxide (Microcrystalline Quartz) var. Jasper · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal/Hexagonal; usually occurs in a microcrystalline massive habit without visible crystal faces.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicates)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 with Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide) inclusions
Formation Process
Sedimentary or Hydrothermal; forms when silica-rich fluids precipitate in gaps or as a replacement mineral within other rocks at relatively low temperatures.
About This Crystal
An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz featuring a mottled or brecciated appearance. This specimen shows a mix of deep brick-red and light pink/grey patches with a smooth, tumbled finish and a vitreous to earthy luster.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Red (from Hematite) and pinkish-white; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to splintery; Specific Gravity: 2.58–2.91; Fluorescence: Generally inert.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: Weak or none (aggregate); Pleochroism: None; Optical Character: Singly refractive aggregate.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Brazil, India, South Africa, Australia, and the USA. Typically found in sedimentary contexts or secondary volcanic deposits.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7.0; Toughness: Excellent due to its dense, interlocking grain structure; Stability: High.
Care & Maintenance
Safe to clean with warm soapy water, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam. Avoid harsh acids. Store separately to prevent scratching softer stones.
Rarity & Value
Common; Value is generally low to moderate. Factors include pattern complexity and polish quality. Price usually ranges from $1 to $5 per tumbled stone.
Special Characteristics
Displays a characteristic 'mottled' or 'orbicular' pattern. It is highly opaque compared to other chalcedony varieties like carnelian.
Lore & History
Historically known as the 'Stone of Endurance.' Used in ancient Egypt for amulets and in Native American traditions as a symbol of the blood of the Earth. Traditionally associated with the Root Chakra and believed to promote grounding and physical strength.
