Brecciated Jasper
Silicon Dioxide var. Jasper (Brecciated Variety) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal/Hexagonal (Microcrystalline); typical habit is massive as part of a sedimentary or volcanic rock matrix.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate)
Chemical Formula
SiO2 (predominantly) with Fe2O3 (Hematite) and various mineral inclusions
Formation Process
Sedimentary/Metamorphic: Forms when Jasper is fractured by tectonic activity and the voids are subsequently filled with another mineral, typically Hematite or Quartz, cementing the angular fragments together.
About This Crystal
Opaque stone featuring a mottled appearance of brick-red, deep brown, and black fragments. It exhibits a vitreous to earthy luster and contains angular clasts (fragments) of original jasper embedded in a darker matrix.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Red, brown, and black patterns. Streak: White or brownish-red. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven. Specific Gravity: 2.58 - 2.91. Tenacity: Brittle but tough due to lack of cleavage.
Optical Properties
Refractive Index: 1.544 - 1.553. Birefringence: Weak (0.009). Pleochroism: None. It is an aggregate material and does not show single-crystal optical phenomena.
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Found worldwide, with major deposits in South Africa, Brazil, India, and the United States (specifically Utah and California).
Hardness & Durability
Mohs hardness: 6.5 - 7. High durability and excellent stability for jewelry; resistant to fading and most household chemicals.
Care & Maintenance
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners even though it is durable. Store separately to prevent scratching softer stones.
Rarity & Value
Common. Value is determined by the complexity of the patterns and the quality of the polish. Generally an affordable stone for lapidary work.
Special Characteristics
Characterized by its distinct 'brecciated' (fragmented and re-cemented) texture. Usually contains high concentrations of Hematite, which provides the red-to-brown coloration.
Lore & History
Historically used in amulets and seals. In traditional lore, it is referred to as a stone of strength and vitality, often associated with the Root Chakra and grounding energy.
