About This Crystal

An opaque to translucent mineral displaying a dark greyish-green base with a striking flash of iridescent blue and green optical effect known as labradorescence

Physical Characteristics

Color ranges from dark grey, brown, or green with metallic or iridescent flashes. Streak is white. Cleavage is perfect in two directions intersecting at approximately 86 degrees. Fracture is uneven to conchoidal. Specific gravity is around 2.68 to 2.72. Tenacity is brittle.

Optical Properties

Biaxial positive with two refractive indices ranging from approximately 1.559 to 1.568. Exhibits strong labradorescence, a schiller effect caused by sub-microscopic lamellar intergrowths

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and harsh chemical acids or prolonged exposure to strong acids. Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching

Common to uncommon, highly valued for specimens displaying vibrant multi-colored labradorescence. Price is generally affordable for raw and tumbled pieces, increasing for high-grade gem cuts
