Fluorite

Fluorite (Calcium Fluoride) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Fluorite

Crystal System

Cubic (Isometric); typically found in cubic, octahedral, or dodecahedral habits; this specimen is carved into a crescent moon shape.

Mineral Group

Halides

Chemical Formula

CaF2 (Calcium Fluoride), often with trace elements of Yttrium or Cerium influencing color.

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; forms through the cooling of hot mineral-rich fluids in rock fractures and cavities, often as a gangue mineral in metal deposits.

About This Crystal

Carved crescent shape showing bands of translucent to semi-opaque green and dark purple/violet. It displays a vitreous (glassy) luster and smooth polished surface.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Multi-colored banding (green/purple). Streak: White. Cleavage: Perfect octahedral in four directions (visible as internal fractures). Specific Gravity: 3.175–3.56. Fluorescence: Strong violet-blue under UV light.

Optical Properties

Isotropic (singly refractive); Refractive Index: 1.433–1.435. No pleochroism. Low dispersion. Transparent to translucent.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Major sources include China, Mexico, Brazil, and the United Kingdom (Blue John). Found in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 4. Relatively soft and brittle; prone to scratching and cleaving. Fair to poor toughness.

Care & Maintenance

Avoid chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam. Hand wash with warm, soapy water. Store separately to prevent scratches. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Rarity & Value

Common; Value is driven by color intensity, clarity, and unique banding. Inexpensive compared to precious gems. Frequently heat-treated or oiled to hide fractures.

Special Characteristics

Displays distinct color zoning (bands) and strong fluorescence. Its name is the root of the word 'fluorescence' due to this property.

Lore & History

Historically used in jewelry and ornaments since Roman times. In metaphysical traditions, it is often called the 'Genius Stone,' associated with mental clarity, focus, and the heart/third-eye chakras.
