Lithium Quartz

Quartz var. Lithium-included Quartz · Collector Mineral / Semi-Precious Gemstone

Lithium Quartz

Crystal System

Trigonal; typically occurs as prismatic crystals with hexagonal cross-sections, often found in massive or rough tumbled forms.

Mineral Group

Silicates; Tectosilicate (Quartz group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with inclusions of (Li,Al)Si2O6 (Lepidolite) or Lithium ions

Formation Process

Hydrothermal or Pegmatitic; forms through the crystallization of silica-rich fluids containing lithium-bearing minerals during the cooling of igneous bodies.

About This Crystal

A translucent to transparent variety of quartz characterized by a distinct pale pinkish-mauve to lavender or light grey-purple color. The color is often concentrated in cloudy inclusions or phantoms near the core or base. It displays a vitreous luster and conchoidal fracture.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Pale pink-mauve; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert but can show weak yellow/orange if lepidolite inclusions are present.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009; Uniaxial (+); Pleochroism: None; Optical phenomena: Can occasionally show phantom growth structures.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Minas Gerais, Brazil (Primary source); typically found in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Good; Stability: Stable under normal conditions, though inclusions may be sensitive to extreme thermal shock.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if heavy inclusions are present. Store separately from harder gemstones like topazes or sapphires to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Uncommon; more valuable than standard clear quartz due to specific locality and lithium content. Value is determined by color intensity and crystal clarity.

Special Characteristics

Known for its natural 'phantom' inclusions of lithium-rich minerals which provide its unique color, distinguishing it from Rose Quartz or Amethyst.

Lore & History

In crystal healing traditions, it is associated with the Heart and Third Eye chakras and is believed to promote emotional peace and stress relief due to the lithium content (traditionally used in mood-balancing medicine). Historically, it is a relatively modern find in the gemstone market compared to ancient stones.
