Crackled Quartz
Silicon Dioxide (Crystallized Macrocrystalline Quartz) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Stone

Crystal System
Trigonal; typically occurs as macrocrystalline hexagonal prisms with pyramidal terminations, though this specimen is processed into a sphere.
Mineral Group
Silicates (Tectosilicate)
Chemical Formula
SiO2
Formation Process
Natural formation is magmatic or hydrothermal. The unique "crackle" appearance is an anthropogenic (man-made) post-processing step involving thermal shock (rapid heating followed by water quenching).
About This Crystal
A spherical, translucent to transparent white/colorless stone measuring approximately 15mm. It exhibits a dense network of internal fractures (crazing) created by heat treatment, giving it a 'frozen' or crystalline shattered appearance under a smooth surface.
Physical Characteristics
Color: Colorless/White; Streak: White; Fracture: Conchoidal (originally), now splintery along internal cracks; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Luster: Vitreous; Diaphaneity: Translucent.
Optical Properties
Uniaxial positive; Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009. The internal fractures cause light scattering and occasional rainbow iris effects (thin-film interference).
Hardness & Durability
Origin Region
Globally found in Brazil, China, and the USA; common in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites.
Hardness & Durability
Mohs Hardness: 7.0 (though structural integrity is reduced to 'Fair' due to internal fracturing/brittleness).
Care & Maintenance
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners as they can shatter the pre-fractured stone; avoid extreme temperature changes; clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
Rarity & Value
Very Common; inexpensive. Value is based on spherical symmetry and clarity between cracks. Often dyed various colors.
Special Characteristics
Thermal shock fracturing (crackle effect) and potential thin-film interference producing small rainbow glints within the fissures.
Lore & History
Historically, clear quartz was believed to be 'eternal ice' by ancient Greeks. In modern metaphysical practices, crackled quartz is associated with the Crown Chakra and is traditionally believed to amplify energy and emotional release.
