Tektite

Tektite (Indochinite variety) · Meteoritic Material (Impactite)

Tektite

Crystal System

Amorphous (Non-crystalline glass)

Mineral Group

Natural Glass / Tektites

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (70-80%) + Al2O3, FeO, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O

Formation Process

Impact Metamorphism; formed when a massive meteorite impact melts terrestrial silica-rich soil/rock and ejects it into the atmosphere, where it solidifies in flight.

About This Crystal

Small, dark, irregular nodule with a pitted, 'dimpled' surface texture known as sculpturing. It is opaque to very slightly translucent on thin edges, showing a deep bottle-green or brownish-black hue. The luster is vitreous (glassy) to dull depending on surface wear.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Black to brownish-black. Streak: White/none. Cleavage: None. Fracture: Conchoidal (shell-like). Specific Gravity: 2.3–2.5. Fluorescence: Typically inert (none).

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.48–1.51. Singly refractive (isotropic). No pleochroism or dispersion. Features flow lines and lechatelierite inclusions under magnification.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Indochinese Strewn Field (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Southern China)

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 5.5–6.5. Brittle tenacity. Susceptible to scratching by quartz or steel. Poor to fair durability for jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning due to potential internal stress. Store separately from harder stones like diamonds or sapphires to prevent scratching.

Rarity & Value

Relatively common in the Indochinese field, but rarer than most terrestrial rocks. Value is determined by size, unique shape (teardrops, buttons), and lack of breakage. Generally inexpensive for small specimens.

Special Characteristics

Surface pitted with 'cupules' or aerodynamic pits caused by atmospheric re-entry; extremely low water content compared to terrestrial volcanic glass (obsidian).

Lore & History

Historically used as amulets in various cultures. In metaphysical traditions, it is believed to enhance communication with other worlds and facilitate astral travel. Often associated with the Root and Crown chakras due to its 'grounded' feel and 'extraterrestrial' origin.
