Red Jasper

Quartz (microcrystalline) var. Jasper · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Red Jasper

Crystal System

Trigonal crystal system; typically occurs in massive, microcrystalline habits without visible crystal faces.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with Fe2O3 (Hematite) inclusions

Formation Process

Forms when silica-rich fluids permeate through volcanic ash or sedimentary rocks, often through hydrothermal circulation or groundwater precipitation.

About This Crystal

An opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz. It features a deep brick red to brownish-red color caused by iron oxide (Hematite) inclusions. This specimen shows a dull to earthy luster on the raw surface and a thin white quartz vein running through the center.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Brick red; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.58-2.91; Fluorescence: Typically inert.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544-1.553; Birefringence: Ultra-low or none (aggregate); Pleochroism: None; Diaphaneity: Opaque.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Found globally; major sources include India, Brazil, USA (Oregon, Idaho), and South Africa. Typically found in sedimentary or low-grade metamorphic environments.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5 to 7.0; Toughness: Very high due to its aggregate structure; highly durable for all types of jewelry.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Resistant to most household chemicals but should be kept away from hydrofluoric acid. Stable under sunlight.

Rarity & Value

Common; very affordable. Value is determined by color intensity and the presence of interesting patterns or secondary mineral inclusions.

Special Characteristics

Contains distinct white silica veining; lacks the transparency of other quartz varieties due to a high percentage of mineral impurities (up to 20%).

Lore & History

Historically known as the 'stone of endurance' and used in antiquity for seals and amulets. Culturally associated with grounding, physical strength, and the Root Chakra in various traditional belief systems.
