Blue Lace Agate

Quartz variety Agate (Chalcedony) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Mineral Specimen

Blue Lace Agate

Crystal System

Trigonal (specifically microcrystalline/cryptocrystalline); typically found in nodular or massive habits with concentric banding.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate group)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) with trace inclusions of iron or manganese

Formation Process

Hydrothermal; it forms when silica-rich fluids permeate cavities/gas bubbles (vesicles) in volcanic rock (lava), cooling and depositing layers over time.

About This Crystal

A translucent to opaque variety of chalcedony characterized by delicate, wavy bands of cool baby blue and white. It exhibits a waxy to vitreous luster and a smooth texture when tumbled.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Light blue with white/cream bands; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven; Specific Gravity: 2.60–2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert or faint yellow-white.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: Weak (0.009); Optical Character: Uniaxial positive; Lacks pleochroism due to microcrystalline structure.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Mainly Namibia (Ysterputs mine), South Africa, and occasionally Brazil or India. Found in volcanic host rocks.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 6.5–7; Toughness: Excellent; Very durable for jewelry and daily wear. Resistant to most household chemicals except hydrofluoric acid.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if there are visible surface-reaching fractures. Store away from intense, direct sunlight to prevent potential color fading over decades.

Rarity & Value

Relatively common, though high-quality 'lace' patterns from the Namibian mines are increasingly sought after. Affordable; pricing is based on pattern complexity and color saturation.

Special Characteristics

Exhibits distinctive 'lace' or wavy banding. Some specimens may show subtle chatoyancy or translucent 'windows' between the opaque bands.

Lore & History

Historically used in amulets to ensure the favor of the gods. In modern metaphysical circles, it is known as the 'Stone of Communication,' associated with the Throat Chakra and used to promote tranquility and clarity of speech.
