Chevron Amethyst

Quartz variety Amethyst (IMA: Silicon Dioxide) · Semi-Precious Gemstone / Decorative Mineral Specimen

Chevron Amethyst

Crystal System

Trigonal, Hexagonal scalenohedral. This specimen is shaped as a polished hexagonal prismatic point tower.

Mineral Group

Silicates (Tectosilicate subgroup)

Chemical Formula

SiO2 with trace amounts of Fe3+ (iron) and natural irradiation

Formation Process

Hydrothermal formation in volcanic cavities (geodes) or veins. The Chevron pattern occurs due to alternating layers of amethyst and milky quartz growth.

About This Crystal

A polished tower showing characteristic V-shaped 'chevron' patterns. Deep purple coloration transitions into translucent milky white layers. High vitreous luster with internal fractures and veining.

Physical Characteristics

Color: Purple and white banding; Streak: White; Cleavage: None; Fracture: Conchoidal; Specific Gravity: 2.65; Fluorescence: Usually inert but can show weak green/blue under LWUV.

Optical Properties

Refractive Index: 1.544–1.553; Birefringence: 0.009 (Uniaxial positive); No chatoyancy or asterism; exhibits pleochroism from purple to reddish-purple.

Hardness & Durability

Origin Region

Notable sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Namibia, and Zambia. Common in hydrothermal veins and geodes.

Hardness & Durability

Mohs Hardness: 7; Toughness: Fair to good; highly durable for jewelry and decor though sensitive to thermal shock.

Care & Maintenance

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Rarity & Value

Common rarity. Value is determined by color intensity and the sharpness of the chevron banding. Generally affordable, with price increased by size and polish quality.

Special Characteristics

Features distinct 'V' or 'Z' shaped color zoning/banding (geometric inclusions) consisting of intergrown milky quartz and amethyst layers.

Lore & History

Historically used by ancient Greeks to prevent intoxication. Modernly associated with the third eye chakra; believed to enhance intuition and combine the serenity of amethyst with the amplification of white quartz.
